NURS 311 Nursing Informatics This course examines the history of healthcare informatics, current issues, basic informatics concepts, and health information management systems. The use of technology to help make decisions and to improve the health status of the individual, family, and community is emphasized. 4
NURS 313 Health Assessment This course provides the student with knowledge and skills in health assessment. It provides the concepts and skills necessary to assess of individuals throughout the lifespan. Students interview, take histories, and demonstrate a baccalaureate-level comprehensive physical examination. 4
NURS 325 Professional Nursing This course provides students an overview of current trends and issues that affect the role and practice of the professional nurse in a challenging health care environment. 4
NURS 333 Nursing Research This course is an introduction to the process of scientific inquiry. The course examines steps in research and evidence-based practice (EBP). Students search relevant databases for current research related to evidence-based practice using critical appraisal of research studies and EBP reviews at a beginning level. 4
NURS 463 Leadership and Management in Nursing This course examines concepts used by the professional nurse to provide leadership and management in healthcare practice environments. The focus is on the understanding of core competencies employed by highly successful nurse leaders and manager, and concepts of role development of the professional nurse. Emphasis on quality improvement and health policy. 4
NURS 465 Public Health Nursing This course introduces RNs to the foundation of public health nursing population-centered health care concepts in community as client to include: physical, mental, and developmental assessment of child and adult; surveillance and epidemiology: chronic and communicable diseases; health promotion and disease prevention; multicultural nursing concepts; research methodology and statistics; health teaching concepts and strategies; population based practice: assessment and development of community collaboration at the level of systems, community and family/individual; assessment of health needs of individuals and families, environment, interventions across the lifespan; legal and health care financing issues; family violence (e.g., child, adult, domestic, elder abuse) prevention, and detection, intervention, treatment, California reporting requirements; case management/care coordination; and emergency preparedness and response. 4
NURS 465P Public Health Nursing Practicum In this course RNs applies principles of population-centered health care concepts learned in NURS 465. The nursing process used to conduct a comprehensive assessment with culturally sensitive care to individuals, families, groups, communities, and vulnerable populations. The CA BRN Child Abuse Mandated Reporter Training Requirement (7) hour module of training in detection, prevention, and reporting requirements, and treatment of child neglect and abuse. The population-based focused practice meets the Council of Linkages between Academia and PHN competencies for public health nursing. This course includes 90-hours of practice to meet the CA BRN PHN Certification requirements. 2
NURS 499 Nursing Capstone This course allows the registered nurse to integrate their learned nursing theory and clinical knowledge with their baccalaureate education in the identification and implementation of a scholarly capstone project. The RN demonstrate achievement of competencies acquired in RN-BSN program into practice. 2

Additional Information

Practicum

Students will complete 90 hours of public health practicum to meet PHN certification requirements.

Credit for prior learning

Students have the option of fulfilling up to eight (8) units of elective requirements at no cost by showing competency through prior learning or experience. To be eligible, students must have an unencumbered RN license and at least two years of nursing experience.
